While many businesses think social media is all about posting photos and videos, there are a lot of other aspects in social media that are beneficial to a business.

Depending on where you are putting up content, you just don’t want to post or schedule and then forget. Social media isn’t like a newspaper. People have an opportunity to respond and you as a representative of the business need to be able to reply (and in a timely manner).

Besides the responding though, here are a few other things to improve your standing in the social hemisphere:

  • Aside from posting on your business pages, you can syndicate your content and reply to other’s content on various other pages and groups. Facebook and LinkedIn have a slew of them. If your company is a user of Twitter or Instagram, you can use a tool like Tweetdeck, Hootsuite and the Instagram search bar to monitor and follow relevant hashtags and comment on those types of tweets and posts as your business.

Remember, social media is about being social. For you to be seen, you need to take that extra step and post where your potential clients are. By answering others’ questions and giving input on others’ posts will show you as an authority in your field and can even lead to new business.

  • Insights and analytics are very important to keep an eye on. What you think is your top content, may be completely opposite to what your followers and fans may be resonating with. Without guessing, the best strategy is to monitor your various social analytics that is built into each platform. There are also many third-party analytics platforms that can take an even deeper look at your content and see how they are performing.

  • Advertising is crucial. 5 or 10 years ago you could get away with posting content and everyone seeing it. Now, most social media companies control what a business is able to show to its fans and followers. For you to really get your content to be seen by a decent size audience, you need to take out your credit card. You don’t though need to spend thousands and thousands of dollars, but a healthy few hundred bucks can go a long way in getting your content exposed. In addition, when you advertise you are able to target the people that mean the most to you so you aren’t wasting resources on a “shotgun approach” type of marketing that you do with other types of mediums. You get your content seen by the people that are interested in what you are saying and potentially want to do business with you.

Like it or not, social media doesn’t sleep and as a business, you really want to do it right, so it doesn’t become a PR nightmare. Unfortunately, some companies just don’t have the bandwidth to go that extra mile when it comes to social media marketing, and that’s okay.
